A native of Spruce Pine, she was the daughter of the late John and Willie Tappan. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and received her Masters of Education in 1957. She was a teacher and an active member of her community, as well as the Catholic church. She was also an athletic trainer and a student of T'ai Chi. Her sense of adventure took her all over the world, with travels throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Africa. Survivors include her daughter, Laura Brown of New Smyrna Beach, FL; sons, Michael Brown of Corvallis, OR, and Chris Brown of Ann Arbor, MI; sisters, Sabra Buchanan of Morristown, TN, Margaret Browning of Morganton, and Mary Phillips of Spruce Pine; and five grandchildren. A memorial service at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Thomas More Oratory in Newark. The family received friends from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Friday, prior to the service. Burial will be in the spring in the North Carolina mountains. Memorial donations may be made to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.
