EDITH SPARKS BUCHANAN 
BAKERSVILLE - Edith Sparks Buchanan, 89, of Starlin Mountain Road, died 
Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006 in a Spruce Pine healthcare facility. She was the 
daughter of the late Ace and Dollie English Sparks, and wife of the late Ira 
Buchanan Sr. She was also preceded in death by a son, Ira Buchanan Jr.; three 
brothers, Newland, Harry and Frank Sparks; and two sisters, Hazel Buchanan and 
Marcelle Duncan. She was a member of Bear Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Terry Buchanan of Marion; two daughters, Geraldine 
Ellis of Bakersville, and Mattie Buchanan Howard of Charlotte; one brother, 
Buster Sparks; one sister, Ruth Duncan of Mars Hill; 10 grandchildren; and 10 
great grandchildren. 

Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Monday in the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel 
of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine. Revs. Billy Stewart, Chris Rathbone and 
Joe Street officiated. Burial was at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Bear Creek Baptist 
Church Cemetery. The family received friends from 5 p.m. until the service hour 
Monday at the funeral home.
