WALTER HOUSTON BUCHANAN 

SPRUCE PINE - Walter Houston Buchanan, 87, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008. Born 
in the Altapass community, he was the son of the late Esley Arthur and 
Josephine Mace Buchanan, and husband of the late Lois Eva Willis Buchanan. He 
was also preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Buchanan; and a sister, 
Velva Thomas. He went to work with Clinchfield Railroad at the depot in Spruce 
Pine, where he worked for forty-one years before retiring. He was a U.S. Army 
veteran of WWII. He was a charter member of Central Baptist Church of Spruce 
Pine and more recently a member of the Bear Creek Baptist Church. He was 
always greatly involved in his church work and enjoyed music, especially 
singing. He was a church choir member, deacon, Sunday School teacher, and a 
member of the senior adult singing group, The Golden Age Singers. He had 
served as a volunteer at the Brian Center in Spruce Pine for 10 years and was 
honored with a regional Volunteer of the Year Award in 1992.

Survivors include a son, David Buchanan of Spruce Pine; a daughter, Margaret 
Buchanan Myers of Marion; and four grandchildren. 

A time of Christian Sharing began at 5 p.m. on Friday at Bear Creek Baptist 
Church, followed by a memorial service at 7 p.m. The Revs. Chris Rathbone and 
Darrin Waldroup officiated. Entombment was at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Spruce 
Pine Memorial Cemetery mausoleum. Memorial donations may be made to the 
American Heart Association or the Mitchell County Senior Center. Webb Funeral 
Home in Spruce Pine assisted the family.
