He was the son of the late Stokes and Pearl Silver Buchanan. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, John and Sherwin Buchanan. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of the Korean War, and was a member and Past Master of the Bakersville Masonic Lodge #357 and Past Patron of Roan Mountain Chapter 29 Order of the Eastern Star. He was a deacon and trustee of Kona Missionary Baptist Church. A construction superintendent, he operated amateur radio station KM4GF. Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Aldridge Buchanan of the home; a son, Ernest Buchanan of the home; two daughters, Nena Sullins and Wanda Biddix, both of Spruce Pine; one sister, Elberta Wing of Kernersville; one brother, Stuart Buchanan of Double Island; four grandchildren; and one great- granddaughter. Funeral services were officiated by the Rev. Steve Williams. Graveside rites were in Kona Baptist Church Cemetery by Bakersville Masonic Lodge #357 AF&AM.
