THELMA HUGHES BYRD 

BAKERSVILLE - Thelma Hughes Byrd, 82, of Battle Branch Road, died Monday, Feb. 
11, 2008 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Harvey and Lockie Davis 
Hughes, and wife of the late Roy Byrd. She was also preceded in death by two 
sons, Marvin and Cecil Byrd; a daughter, Vickie Sue Byrd; and two brothers. 
She was retired from American Thread Company and was a member of Church of 
Jesus Christ at Beans Creek.

Survivors include a daughter, Nellie Pitman of Bakersville; two sons, 
Kenneth "Crow" Byrd and Tony Byrd, both of Bakersville; four sisters, Alma 
Buchanan of Bakersville, Cora Reynolds of Big Fork, Mont., Nora Arrowood of 
Pontiac, Ill., and Annie Moffitt of Pennsylvania; one brother, Clyde Hughes of 
Bakersville; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-
grandchildren. 

Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Church of Jesus Christ at 
Beans Creek. G.B. Garland, David Byrd and Stokes Cook officiated. Burial was 
at 11 a.m. Thursday in Beans Creek Cemetery. The family received friends from 
6 p.m. until the service hour Wednesday at the church. Memorial donations may 
be made to Hospice of Mitchell County, P.O. Box 38, Spruce Pine, NC 28777. 
Henline-Hughes Funeral Home in Bakersville assisted the family.
