BENJAMIN HAYES BYRD 

BAKERSVILLE - Benjamin Hayes Byrd, 81, of Hwy. 226 North, died Thursday, Dec. 
15, 2005 at his home. He was the son of the late R.H. and Mabel Webb Byrd. He 
was also preceded in death by a sister, Betty Ayers. He was self-employed in 
the timber industry and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Red Hill 
United Methodist Church, a Director for French Broad Electric Corporation, and 
a past member of the Board of Directors for Northwestern Bank.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Byrd of the home; one son, Phil Byrd of 
Spruce Pine; two daughters, Nancy Bragg of Asheville, and Betty Hughes of 
Bakersville; three brothers, James, Bradley and Jack Byrd, all of Bakersville; 
one sister, Lois Gouge of Bakersville; five grandchildren; and one great 
granddaughter. 

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Henline-Hughes 
Funeral Home in Bakersville. Revs. David Lee and Max Holland officiated. Burial 
followed in Red Hill Cemetery. The family received friends from 6-9 p.m. 
Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of 
Mitchell County, P.O. Box 38, Spruce Pine, NC 28777; or Red Hill United 
Methodist Church, c/o Anne Byrd, Hwy. 226 North, Bakersville, NC 28705.
