He was the son of the late R.H. and Mabel Webb Byrd. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Betty Ayers. He was self-employed in the timber industry and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Red Hill United Methodist Church, a Director for French Broad Electric Corporation, and a past member of the Board of Directors for Northwestern Bank. Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Byrd of the home; one son, Phil Byrd of Spruce Pine; two daughters, Nancy Bragg of Asheville, and Betty Hughes of Bakersville; three brothers, James, Bradley and Jack Byrd, all of Bakersville; one sister, Lois Gouge of Bakersville; five grandchildren; and one great granddaughter. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Henline-Hughes Funeral Home in Bakersville. Revs. David Lee and Max Holland officiated. Burial followed in Red Hill Cemetery. The family received friends from 6-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Mitchell County, P.O.
