He was the son of the late Carroel and Ada Green Baker. He was retired from the Town of Spruce Pine and from the Spruce Pine Volunteer Fire and Rescue. He served in the Armed Forces during WWII, ranking as a corporal in the Army Tank Corps. He served his country from May 13, 1943 to January 21, 1946, and also served overseas in Germany in the 12th Armored Division. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include: his wife, Ruby Winters Baker; daughter, Betty Silver of Spruce Pine; sons, Charles Baker of Spruce Pine, and Bill Baker of Newland; and five grandchildren. Services were held on Sunday, June 24 at 3:30 p.m. in the First Baptist Church. Revs. David Vess and Bryan Griffith officiated. Burial was held in the Spruce Pine Memorial Cemetery. The family received friends from 2:00 p.m. until the service hour. Webb Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
