ETHEL KATE BUCHANAN

CHARLOTTE - Ethel Kate Buchanan, 81, formerly of Bakersville, 
died Tuesday, Apr. 8, 2003 in a Charlotte hospital. She was the 
daughter of the late Monroe and Dora Robinson Gortney, and wife 
of the late Frank Buchanan Sr. She was also preceded in death by 
a son, Teddy Joe Buchanan; a grandson, Paul Edward Buchanan; 
sisters, Tilda Garland, Etta Stevenson, and Isby Whitson; and 
brothers, Charles, Dave and Albert Gortney.
Survivors include her daughter, Peggy Marvel of Charlotte; a son, 
Frank Buchanan Jr. of Boone; sisters, Alice Tipton of Green 
Mountain, Margie Ingram of Johnson City, TN, and Mae McGill of 
Elizabethton; brothers, Sloan Gortney of Johnson City, Earcel 
Gortney of Elkhorn, KY, and Clarence Gortney of Green Mountain; 
six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and one great great 
grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Grindstaff 
Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine. Rev. Gerald 
Grindstaff officiated. Burial was in Silver Chapel Cemetery. The 
family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
