BALDRIDGE SPRUCE PINE – William D. Baldridge, 82, died Saturday, February 10, 2001 at his residence. Born in Texas, he graduated from Texas A&M as an aeronautical engineer and served as a naval aviator in WWII and Korea, before retiring as a Lt. Commander. Later he worked with the Department of Navy in Washington before taking an executive position at Grumman Aircraft Corp., in New York. Here he worked on the Lunar Excursion Module, the A6 Intruder and the F-14 program before returning to Washington to work with the Jimmy Carter Administration. After retiring to North Carolina, he served on the Paris Council and the finance committee at St. Lucien Catholic Church, where he was a member. He was also on the board of directors for Shepherd Staff. Survivors include his wife, Joan Baldridge of the home; a daughter, Sue Kent of Ormond Beach, FL; a son, David Baldridge of Greenport, NY; and two grandsons. A memorial mass was held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Lucien Catholic Church. Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine was in charge of arrangements.
