BERNITA HUGHES BLEVINS
SPRUCE PINE – Bernita Hughes Blevins, 77, of Azalea Drive, died Friday, 
May 17, 2002 in Spruce Pine Community Hospital. She was the daughter of 
the late Warfield and Mamie Phillips Hughes. She was also preceded in 
death by one son, Glenn Nathaniel Blevins Jr. A member of First Baptist 
Church of Spruce Pine, she taught eighth grade at Deyton Elementary School, 
was a member of the Spruce Pine Women’s Club, helped organize Hospice of 
Mitchell County, and was an active organizer for Special Olympics.
Survivors include her husband, Glenn N. Blevins; three daughters, Patricia 
Webster of Chapel Hill, Mamie Alice Blevins of Monroe, and Mary Ethel 
Blevins of Mebane; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of 
Spruce Pine. Revs. David Vess, Victor Greene and R.M. Cassity officiated. 
Burial followed in Green Young Cemetery. The family received visitors from 
7-9 p.m. Sunday. Henline-Hughes Funeral Home in Bakersville was in charge 
of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Mitchell County, P.O.
