MITCHELL COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - Richard M. "Preacher" Cassity, 3 Apr 2003 ----¤¤¤¤---- REV. RICHARD M. CASSITY SPRUCE PINE - Richard M. "Preacher" Cassity died Thursday, April 3, 2003. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie; a grandson, Richard Phillips; his mother and father; and two brothers. He had been a pastor in Alabama and Tennessee, before coming to Spruce Pine. He took mission trips to Cuba, the Britist Isles, and Korea. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Spruce Pine, where he was Pastor Emeritus. He was also a long-time member of the Lion's Club. He published his autobiography, "He Lifted Me," in 2001. Survivors include his son, Gen. Edward Cassity of Albany, GA; daughters, Anne Bray of Tulsa, OK, Jean Potter of Kingsport, TN, and Donna Phillips of Spruce Pine; a sister, Mary Ann Anderson of Bristol, VA; one brother, W.C. Cassity of Pensacola, FL; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church. Revs. David Vess, Max Holland, Steve Sisk and Dallas Renfro officiated. Burial was in Spruce Pine Memorial Cemetery. The family received friends from 2-5 p.m. Saturday at Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine.
