JOHN D. (J.D.) COLLIS

MARION - John "J.D." Collis Sr., 76, a native of Mitchell County, 
died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003 at the Regional VA Medical Center. He 
was the son of the late D.D. and Jessie Glenn Collis. He was also 
preceded in death by a son, John Collis Jr. A retired log home builder 
and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of WWII, he was a member of Chestnut 
Grove Baptist Church in Little Switzerland.
Survivors include his wife, Britta Carpenter Collis of the home; two 
daughters, Judy Koon of North Augusta, SC, and Sharon Stepp of Woodfin; 
three sons, Charles Collis, U.S. Navy, Japan, Jeff Collis of 
Hendersonville, and Pat Stepp of Asheville; two brothers, Glenn Collis 
of Lenoir, and Jim Collis of Marion; a sister, Ivory Hopper of Arizona; 
five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
Graveside services with military rites by the U.S. Marine Corps were 
held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Collis Family Cemetery in Little 
Switzerland. Richard Hollifield officiated. Memorial donations may be 
made to Mountain Area Hospice, 85 Zillicoa Street, Asheville, NC 28801.
