He was the son of the late Millard and Grace Washburn Cox. He was also preceded in death by a son, Sonnie Cox. He was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and a charter member of Vansant Baptist Church. He was a life-time member of the American Legion John Ratliff Post #164 of Grundy, VA, a member of VFW Post #7360, retired owner/operator of the Thimble Coal Company, and co-founder of the First Bank and Trust of Lebanon, VA. Survivors include his wife, Inez Shipman Cox of the home; one daughter, Beverly Tiller of Orange City, FL; one sister, Hilda Hollyfield of Little Switzerland; three brothers, Clark Cox of Vansant, VA, John Edd Cox of Dunn, and Reid Cox of Spartanburg, SC; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Vansant Baptist Church. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday At Grassy Creek Baptist Church in Spruce Pine. Burial followed in Grassy Creek Cemetery. The family received friends from 1 p.m. until the service hour at the church.
