She was the daughter of the late Caleb and Mary Ann Calloway Shook, and wife of the late Carl Ernest Carpenter. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Marie, and a son, Lloyd. She was a member of Plumtree Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her daughters, Lois Styles and Margaret Carpenter, both of Thomasville, Mary Carpenter of Plumtree, and Dixie Burleson of Taylorsville; sons, Leroy and Jack Carpenter, both of Plumtree, Lester Carpenter of Durham, and Bobby Carpenter of Spruce Pine; 17 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Friday in the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine. Rev. Wallace Wise officiated. Burial was in Johnson Cemetery. The family received friends from 6 p.m. until the service hour Friday at the funeral home.
