JOHN SHULUR DAYTON JR.

SPRUCE PINE - John Shulur Dayton Jr., 72, of Highland Avenue, 
died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003 in a Morganton hospital. He 
was the son of the late John and Margaret Loven Dayton Sr. 
A charter member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, he had 
served as superintendent, chairman of the church board, and 
Toe Valley Charge Recording Secretary. He was a veteran of 
the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Stamey Dayton of the home; 
sons, Rev. Jerry Dayton and Johnny Dayton, both of Marion; a 
daughter, Beth Burleson of Morganton; sisters, Ruth Barrier 
of Nebo, Rachel Dayton of Santa Anna, CA, and Corina Woodard 
of Raleigh; brothers, Robert, David and Tony Dayton, all of 
Spruce Pine, and Roger Dayton of Charleston; six grandchildren; 
and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion 
United Methodist Church. Revs. Jerry Dayton and Jim White 
officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. The family 
received friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Webb Funeral Home in 
Spruce Pine. Memorial donations may be made to Mt. Zion United 
Methodist Church, c/o Tokuko Dayton, P.O. Box 622, Spruce Pine, 
NC 28777.
