MITCHELL COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - William Ray Duncan, 27 Oct 2002 ----¤¤¤¤---- WILLIAM RAY DUNCAN SPRUCE PINE - William Ray Duncan, 70, of Tappan Street, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002 in an Asheville hospital. He was the son of the late Floyd and Pansy Grindstaff Duncan. He was also preceded in death by a son, Roger Duncan. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he was employed with Loan and Credit Company in Texas, Webb Funeral Home, and later United Family Life Insurance. A retired member of the Spruce Pine Volunteer Fire Department, he was currently serving on the Board of Trustees and the Building Fund Committee. He was a member and past deacon of First Baptist Church in Spruce Pine, a charter member of Spruce Pine Optimist Club and volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels. Survivors include his wife, Faye Carpenter Duncan of the home; a sister, Kathleen Wilson Bowman of Jonesborough, TN; a brother, Charles Duncan of Spruce Pine; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church. Dr. David Vess and Rev. Gale Lammey officiated. Burial was at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Spruce Pine Memorial Cemetery. The family received friends from 6 p.m. until the service hour Tuesday at the church. Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine was in charge of arrangements.
