He was the son of the late Nathan and Mercy Griffith Garland. He was also preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers. He was retired from Spruce Pine Lumber Company and was the oldest deacon and member of Mine Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Nell Garland of the home; two daughters, Anne Hughes of Johnson City, Tenn., and Jean McCourry of Bakersville; a son, Roger Garland of Bakersville; three sisters, Gertha Gage of Unicoi, Tenn., Monnie Love of Erwin, Tenn., and Marie Branham of Rockwood, Tenn.; one brother, Lloyd Garland of Unicoi, Tenn.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mine Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Kenneth Murphy and Wade Boone officiated. Burial followed in Mine Creek Cemetery. The family received friends from 1:30 p.m. until the service hour Sunday at the church. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Mitchell County, P.O. Box 38, Spruce Pine, NC 28777; or Mine Creek Baptist Church, c/o Roger Garland, 650 Duck Branch Road, Bakersville, NC 28705. Henline-Hughes Funeral Home in Bakersville assisted the family.
