JOHN GREENE 

NEWTON - John Greene, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008 at Palliative Care Center 
and Hospice of Catawba Valley. Born in Mitchell County, he was the son of the 
late William N. Greene and the late Bessie Norman Greene. He was also preceded 
in death by a son, Wayne P. Greene; a daughter, Debbie Greene Kiker; two 
brothers; and a sister. He was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army, and a member 
of First Baptist Church in Claremont since 1959.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Thomas Greene of the home; a daughter, Linda 
Smith of Newton; a sister, Marie Wilson of Bakersville; four grandchildren; 
four great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. 

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday at Burke Mortuary Chapel in 
Newton. The Rev. Jason Guyer officiated. Burial followed in Conover City 
Cemetery with military rites performed by American Legion Post 16. The family 
received friends from 10 a.m. until the service hour Friday at the funeral 
home. Memorial donationss may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund,
