A native of Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late John and Bertha Thomas Whitson and the wife of the late Vernon Grindstaff, Sr. who passed away in 2000. During her childhood and adolescent years she attended the Tipton Hill United Methodist Church. After her marriage to Vernon Grindstaff, Sr. she became a member of the Silver Chapel Baptist church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and sang in the church choir. She was preceded in death by a great grandson, Nahum Grindstaff. Survivors include a daughter: Joan McKinney, Bakersville; three sons: Gerald Grindstaff, Harold Grindstaff, Vernon Grindstaff, Jr, all of Bakersville; a brother, Sherwood Whitson, of Burnsville; four grandsons; 11 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 24, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Silver Chapel Baptist Church. The Rev's. Jonathan Thacker, Jay Orr, Harold Grindstaff, and Matthew Grindstaff officiated the services. The family received friends Sunday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home. Burial was in the Silver Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
