RUTH MCCOURRY GORTNEY 

BAKERSVILLE – Ruth McCourry Gortney, 77, died Saturday, April 21, 2001 at 
Spruce Pine Community Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Jeter and 
Belle Deyton McCourry. A homemaker, she was a member of Union Hill Freewill
Baptist Church. 
Survivors include a daughter, Helma Deyton of Burnsville; a son, Ronald 
Gortney of Asheville; sisters, Virgie Adkins of Hendersonville, and Trula 
Garland of Essex, MD; brothers, Paul Damon McCourry and Bud McCourry both of 
New Smyrna, FL; and five grandchildren. 
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Henline-Hughes 
Funeral Home in Bakersville. Revs. Wade Boone and Chet Glenn officiated. 
Burial followed in Union Hill Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to 
Hospice of Mitchell County, P.O. Box 38, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.
