SAMUEL (SAM) CARTER GOUGE

BAKERSVILLE – Sam Gouge, 85, retired Mitchell County sheriff, died Monday, 
November 12, at the VA Medical Center in Asheville. He was the son of the late 
Leonard and Dollie Ledford Gouge. In addition to serving as sheriff for 20 
years, he was a U.S. Army veteran during World War II and served in Italy. 
After retirement, he served on the Governor's Advisory Board for Prisons and 
on the Board of Directors of the Mitchell County Department of Social 
Services.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Byrd Gouge, of the home; three daughters, 
Susie Strickland and Janice Greene, both of Morganton, and Cindy Lawson of 
Spruce Pine; two sisters, Nora Garland of Buladean, and Lena Masters of Green 
Mountain; one brother, Howard Gouge of Unicoi, TN; seven grandchildren; and 
two great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Henline-Hughes 
Funeral Home in Bakersville. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday 
in Byrd Cemetery, above Red Hill Methodist Church. The family received friends 
from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday. Memorial donations may be made to: Mitchell High
