He was the son of the late Grover and Bertha Greene Grindstaff. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service, and retired from the Spruce Pine Police Department after 12 years of service. Survivors include his wife, Lucy Grindstaff of the home; sons, Dean Hoyle of Micaville, and Richard Hoyle of Asheville; daughters, Violet Ann Weaver of Indiana, and Stephanie Ledford of Spruce Pine; sisters, Helen Jones and June Willis, both of Bakersville, and Louise McClellan of Spruce Pine; brother, Jay Grindstaff of Burnsville; and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce pine. Rev. Vernon Buchanan officiated. Burial followed in the Lily Branch Cemetery. The family received friends from 10 a.m. until the service hour at the funeral home
