Born in Erie, PA, he was the son of the late H. Glenn and Mary Jane Campbell Gross. He was also preceded in death by a brother, James Gross, and a sister, Elizabeth Louise Gross. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served in the Korean War. He was also a retired trucker and attended Altapass Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Augusta Buchanan Gross; five sons, Charles, Barry and John Gross, all of Spruce Pine, Michael Gross of High Point, and Paul Gross of Mililani, Hawaii; four daughters, Mary Sparks of Bakersville, Jill Byrd of Spruce Pine, Cathy Robinson of Lexington and Rebecca Whitworth of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; and one step great grandchild. Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Altapass Baptist Church. Revs. Steve Sisk and Chris Rathbone officiated. Burial was at 11 a.m. Friday in McKinney Gap Cemetery. The family received friends from 6 p.m. until the service hour Thursday. Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine was in charge of arrangements.
