CLAYTON LEE HOWELL 

SPRUCE PINE - Clayton "Lee" Howell, 82, of Swiss Pine Lake Drive, died 
Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006. He was one of 13 children of the late Troy and Elsie 
Howell. He quit school to work on the family farm, then went to work for 
International Minerals Corporation. He was later co-owner of Howell Furniture 
and Appliance in Spruce Pine. He then changed careers and raised Christmas 
trees and cattle. He enjoyed riding his horses and playing golf. He was a 
decorated veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of Newdale Presbyterian 
Church, where he had served as deacon and elder, and was a member of the 
church choir.

Survivors include his wife, Herma Thomas Howell; a son, Dennis Lee Howell; 
three sisters, Kate Bartlett of Greensboro, and Maude Greene and Dorothy 
Grindstaff, both of Bakersville; two grandsons; two great-grandchildren; and 
several nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Newdale Presbyterian Church. 
Rev. Michael Brazelle officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The 
family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Webb Funeral Home in Spruce 
Pine. Memorial donations may be made to Newdale Presbyterian Church, Newdale 
Church Road, Burnsville, NC 28714; or Hospice of Mitchell County, P.O. Box 38, 
Spruce Pine, NC 28777.
