HERBERT HOWELL 

BAKERSVILLE – Herbert Howell, 93, of the Rebels Creek community, died Monday, 
March 19, 2001 in a Spruce Pine rest home. He was the son of the late Byrd and 
Bertha Shook Howell. He was also preceded in death by two sons, J.D. and Guy 
Howell; a grandson, Greg Howell; and three brothers, Claude, Floyd and Ed 
Howell. A member of Rebels Creek Baptist Church, he was a retired finish
carpenter and cabinet maker. He was the bass singer for the original Rebels 
Creek Quartet, and later sang with the Rebelaires. 

Survivors include his wife, Estelle Murdock Howell; daughters, Wilma Tinney 
and Liona Taylor, both of Bakersville; sons, Ted and Kenneth Howell, both of 
Bakersville; a brother, George Howell of Saluda; 11 grandchildren; and 11 
great grandchildren. 

Funeral services were held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Grindstaff Memorial 
Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine. Revs. Steve Williams and Wallace 
Wise officiated. Burial was in Rebels Creek Cemetery. The family received 
friends from 6 p.m. until the service hour at the funeral home. Memorial
donations may be made to the Rebels Creek Cemetery Fund, 64 Howell Road, 
Bakersville, NC 28705.
