He was the son of the late Byrd and Bertha Shook Howell. He was also preceded in death by two sons, J.D. and Guy Howell; a grandson, Greg Howell; and three brothers, Claude, Floyd and Ed Howell. A member of Rebels Creek Baptist Church, he was a retired finish carpenter and cabinet maker. He was the bass singer for the original Rebels Creek Quartet, and later sang with the Rebelaires. Survivors include his wife, Estelle Murdock Howell; daughters, Wilma Tinney and Liona Taylor, both of Bakersville; sons, Ted and Kenneth Howell, both of Bakersville; a brother, George Howell of Saluda; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine. Revs. Steve Williams and Wallace Wise officiated. Burial was in Rebels Creek Cemetery. The family received friends from 6 p.m. until the service hour at the funeral home.
