RALPH HUGHES

SPRUCE PINE - Ralph Hughes, 82, of the Kona community, died Tuesday, 
May 20, 2003. He was the son of the late Fonze A. and Francis B. 
Hughes. He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Ruth Thomas, 
Shirley Ryan, Helen Wilson, and Margaret Azel. He was a member of 
Spruce Pine United Methodist Church for 55 years, where he taught 
Sunday School, led youth, and held many offices. He was a WWII veteran 
of the U.S. Navy and a plant manager for Feldspar Corporation, then 
managed the plant in Middletown, CT.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Pendley Hughes; a daughter, Carolyn 
Brunning of Robbinsville, NJ; sons, Bill Hughes of Martinez, GA, and 
David Hughes of Spruce Pine; sisters, Katherine Moore of Stanley, 
Mildred Robinson of Burnsville, and Martha Burleson of Spruce Pine; 
brothers, Leroy, Mike and Rodney Hughes of Micaville, Max, Jack and 
Charles Hughes of Burnsville, and Larry Hughes of Brevard; seven 
grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Spruce Pine United 
Methodist Church. Burial followed in Spruce Pine Memorial Cemetery. 
The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Webb Funeral 
Home in Spruce Pine. Memorial donations may be made to Spruce Pine 
Fire Department Building Fund, 11090 Hwy. 226 South, Spruce Pine, NC 
28777; or to Hospice of Mitchell County, P.O. Box 38
