MITCHELL COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - Elmer Hughes, 5 Aug 2004

ROCK HILL, SC - Elmer Hughes, 79, formerly of the Poplar community, 
died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004 at his home. He was the son of the late 
Roe and Bertha Tipton Hughes. A retired U.S. Army veteran, he was a 
member of New Hope Baptist Church in Dalton, GA.

Survivors include his wife, Lena Peterson Hughes of the home; a 
daughter, Jackie Connolly of Rock Hill; two brothers, Roe (Jr.) Hughes, 
and Kis Hughes, both of Green Mountain; four sisters, Joyce Garland of 
Jonesboro, TN, Thelma Wilson of Flag Pond, TN, Betty Renfro of Green 
Mountain, and Madeline Foster of Erwin, TN; and one grandchild. 
Funeral services were held at 5 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Greene 
Funeral Home. Rev. Mike Lowery officiated. Burial was at 2 p.m. Sunday 
in Forest Hills Cemetery with full military rites. The family received 
friends following the service at the funeral home.
