A native of Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Aaron and Vista Tipton Masters. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mabel Masters Young. He was a member of First Church of The Brethren in Kingsport, Tenn., and a U.S. Navy veteran. He was retired from Mason-Dixon Frieght Lines in Kingsport, Tenn. He was the former Register of Deeds for Mitchell County. Survivors include his wife, Edna Gouge Masters of the home; a son, Dan Masters of Johnson City, Tenn.; a daughter, Peggy Spurgeon of Blountville, Tenn.; brothers, Bruce Masters of Gray, Tenn, and Gene Masters of Waldorf, Md.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Sunday at The First Church of the Brethren. The Rev. Rufus Smith officiated. Burial was at 11 a.m. Monday in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 6 p.m. until the service hour Sunday at the church. Henline-Hughes Funeral Home in Bakersville assisted the family.
