BETTY JOYCE MURPHY 

SPRUCE PINE - Betty Joyce Murphy, 76, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006 in Spruce 
Pine Community Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Dub and Ada Buchanan 
Johnson. She was retired from United Virginia Bank and was a member of Pine 
Branch Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Archie Murphy of the home; a son, Michael 
Murphy of Locust Grove, Va.; two sisters, Jean Buchanan of Winston-Salem, and 
Katherine Riddle of Spruce Pine; two granddaughters; and two great 
grandchildren. 

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at Pine Branch Baptist Church. 
The Revs. Steve Williams and Sibbald Lambert officiated. Burial was in the 
church cemetery. The family received friends from 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Henline-
Hughes Funeral Home in Bakersville. Memorial donations may be made to Pine 
Branch Church Building Fund, c/o Dennis Buchanan, 48 Church Road, Spruce Pine, 
NC 28777.
