A native of Mitchell County, N.C., he was a son of the late John and Julia Honeycutt Murphy. Mr. Murphy had lived most of his life in Carter County and was a retired heavy equipment operator. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and four Bronze Stars. He attended Watauga Point United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ollie Wills Murphy; a daughter, Doris Ann Murphy; a sister, Pearl Renfro; and two brothers, Herve and Earl Murphy. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Greer Murphy, Johnson City; two granddaughters and their spouses, Robin and Jeff Tickle, Bristol, and Julie and Darrell Nave, Elizabethton; a great-grandson, Jet Tickle, Bristol; and a sister, Eula Friesland, Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 10, in the George Mottern Cemetery with Mr. Bedford Motley, minister, officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to the staff of Ivy Hall Nursing Home for all their acts of kindness. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of his son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Greer Murphy, 2189 Dave Buck Road, Johnson City.
