JOSEPH S. MCKINNEY
SPRUCE PINE - Joseph S. "Joe" McKinney, 65, of Ponderosa Drive, died 
Saturday, July 27, 2002 in Spruce Pine Community Hospital following a 
short illness. He was the son of the late Samuel and Mollie Washburn 
McKinney. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen York. A 
retired carpenter, he was a member of Grassy Creek Baptist Church. He 
was a U.S. Army veteran, past master of the Spruce Pine Masonic Lodge 
554 A.F.A.M. and past Worthy Patron of the Spruce Pine Eastern Star 
#27.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Sue Grindstaff McKinney of the home; 
a daughter, Marilyn Byrd of Spruce Pine; sisters, Ora McKinney and 
Emma Lou Burnette, both of Spruce Pine, and Myrtle Lois Shroud of Nebo; 
brothers, Charlie and Gus McKinney, both of Spruce Pine; and several 
nieces a nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grassy Creek Baptist 
Church. Revs. Matthew Mills and R.M. Cassity officiated. Burial 
followed in Grassy Creek Memorial Gardens. Graveside rites were conducted 
by the Spruce Pine Masonic Lodge. The family received friends from 7-9 
p.m. Monday at Webb Funeral Home.
