A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Burgess and Martha Jones McMahan. He was a member of White Oak Baptist Church and founder of Gateway Market in Bakersville. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Juanita Buchanan McMahan of the home; two sons, Jim McMahan and Tom McMahan, both of Bakersville; two daughters, Ann Webb of Spruce Pine, and Billie June Harwood of Barnardsville; one sister, Vera Pitman of Spruce Pine; one brother, Rev. B.G. McMahan of Spruce Pine; nine grandchildren; and one great grandchild. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.Friday at White Oak Baptist Church. Revs. B.G. McMahan, Don Stafford, Jack Michaels and Buster Yelton officiated. Burial followed in Bear Creek Cemetery. The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Henline-Hughes Funeral Home in Bakersville.
