MITCHELL COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - Dr. James Thomas McRae, 11 Jul 2003 ----¤¤¤¤---- DR. JAMES THOMAS MCRAE BAKERSVILLE - Dr. James Thomas McRae, 83, of Hemlock Drive, died Friday, July 11, 2003 at the Brian Center in Spruce Pine. A native of Bonita, MS, he was the son of the late James Thomas and Ludie Camp McRae. He was also preceded in death by a son, Robert McRae. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and member of Bakersville Methodist Church. He received his MD from Bowman Gray School of Medicine and was a medical missionary in Lebanon, Jordan and Gaza for five years. He practiced surgery in Elkin, Spruce Pine and Bakersville before supervising a residency program at N.C. Baptist Hospital for 13 years. He was a member of the Mitchell County Historical Society, Retired School Personnel and Chamber of Commerce. Survivors include his wife, Inez Johnson McRae of the home; sons, James McRae of East Bend, David McRae of Greenville, SC, Bill McRae of Wilmington, and Alan Blevins of Savannah, GA; daughters, Betty Darnell of Mooresville, and Martha Allman of Winston-Salem; a sister, Ethel Meadow of Gulf Port, MS; 11 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bakersville Methodist Church. Revs. David Lee and Andy Willis officiated. Henline-Hughes Funeral Home in Bakersville was in charge of arrangements.
