MITCHELL COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - Earl Murphy Jr., 4 Mar 2005 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Earl Murphy Jr., 74, Sugar Hollow Road, Elizabethton, died Friday, March 4, 2005, at his residence. Mr. Murphy was a native of Spruce Pine, N.C., and the son of the late Earl Houston Murphy Sr. and Jennie Sorrells Murphy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Goldie Arnett Murphy; a son, Johnny Rex Murphy; a grandson, Clarke Glenn Murphy; a great-grandson, Houston Joe Murphy; and two sisters, Maphra Webb and Lena Grindstaff. Mr. Murphy was a retired employee of the city of Elizabethton, where he was a heavy equipment operator. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean conflict. Survivors include six sons. Gary Murphy, Panama City, Fla., Eddie Murphy, Dennis Murphy and Tony Murphy, all of Elizabethton, Jackie Murphy and Kenneth Murphy, both of Ashboro, N.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Jennie and David Birchfield, Elizabethton; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Cleo Moore and Louise Hardin, both of Ft. Washington, Md.; a brother, Carol Murphy, Elizabethton; and a special friend, Irene Turner. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Murphy will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, March 7, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. L.D. Berry and Rev. Steve Waycaster officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday, prior to the service. Friends may also call at the residence at anytime. Friends may call the family at 542-2354. Graveside services and interment will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, in the Arnett Cemetery, Sugar Hollow Road, with Military Honors accorded by the Captain Lynn H. Folsom V.F.W. Post No. 2166. Active pallbearers will be Sam Murphy, Bradley Murphy, Adam Birchfield, Josh Birchfield, David T. Birchfield, Gary M. Murphy and Ken Murphy. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary L. Murphy, Eddie Murphy, Jackie Murphy, Kenneth Murphy, Dennis Murphy, Tony Murphy and David L. Birchfield. Everyone planning to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:50 a.m. Tuesday.
