CELENE SLAGLE PHILLIPS 

HUDSON, NH - Celene Slagle Phillips, 85, died Thursday, March 22, 2007 in 
Fairview Nursing Home in Hudson, NH. Born in Mitchell County, she was the 
daughter of the late Charles and Mattie Gouge Slagle, and wife of the late Dr. 
David L. Phillips. She was an avid bridge player and craftsperson, especially 
quilting. She had worked as a medical records librarian and was on the Board 
of Directors at Lees-McRae College. She also volunteered with the N.C. Heart 
Association and Spruce Pine Community Hospital.

Survivors include a son, David L. Phillips Jr.; a daughter, Joan Plummer; 
three sisters, Virginia Hawfield, Madeline Bryant, and Kate Hoskins; four 
grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. 

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Spruce Pine United 
Methodist Church. Burial followed in Spruce Pine Memorial Cemetery. Memorial 
donations may be made to the New Hampshire Brain Injury Association, Spruce 
Pine Community Hospital Building Fund, the North Carolina Heart Association, 
or Spruce Pine United Methodist Church. Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine 
assisted the family.
