A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Carter and Millie Byrd Phillips, and husband of the late Ilene Buchanan Phillips. He was retired from Henredon Furniture with 25 years of service. Survivors include a son, Mike Phillips of Spruce Pine; a daughter, Kay Grindstaff of Spruce Pine; seven brothers, Edward and Chester Phillips of Bakersville of Bakersville, Homer and W.G. Phillips of Burlington, Boyd and Raymond Phillips of Greensboro, and Lester Phillips of Charlotte; four sisters, Ginny Murrill and Edna Gresson of Gibsonville, Viola Bennett of Jonesboro, TN, and Vola Stewart of Greensboro; one granddaughter; and one great grandson. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine. Revs. Jay Orr and Holt Whitson officiated. Burial was in Silver Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
