MARY ELMA PITMAN
SPRUCE PINE – Mary Elma Pitman, 84, of McKinney Road, died Friday, March 1, 
2002 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Johnny Waits and Minnie 
Pendley Pitman. She was a homemaker and charter member of Mt. Carmel Baptist 
Church.

Survivors include her sisters, Edna Burleson and Cathy Jones, both of Spruce 
Pine; and two brothers, Ray Pitman of Spruce Pine and Burl Pitman of 
Burnsville.

Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. 
Revs. Harold Grindstaff and Mike Brown officiated. Burial was at 11 a.m. 
Monday in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. The family received friends from 6-7 p.m. 
Sunday at the church. Henline-Hughes Funeral Home was in charge of 
arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to Mt. Carmel Baptist Church 
Building Fund, c/o Richard Haney, 195 Gouges Creek Road, Spruce Pine, NC 
28777.
