MITCHELL COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - Edward William Proffitt, 27 Aug 2003 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- EDWARD WILLIAM PROFFITT BAKERSVILLE - Edward William Proffitt, 87, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003 at the Brian Center in Spruce Pine, where he had been a resident for almost three years. He was the son of the late Ed and Minnie Hensley Proffitt, and husband of the late Winnie Wilson Proffitt. He worked for the North Carolina State Highway Department for 40 years. After retiring from there, he worked for Henredon for several years. He was a longtime member of Bakersville Baptist Church, where he served as Sunday School teacher and deacon. He served on the board of the Bakersville Community Medical Clinic, which he helped to establish, and was a member of the Bakersville Masonic Lodge and a Shriner. He was also a member of the Bakersville Town Council and the Bakersville Lions Club. Survivors include two daughters, Scottie Wellborn of Spruce Pine, and Carolyn Eller of Greensboro; a sister, Annie Lemons of Gaffney, SC; three grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Bakersville Baptist church. Revs. Billy Stewart and Jim Sutton officiated. Burial followed at Bakersville Memorial Cemetery, with the Bakersville Masonic Lodge conducting graveside rites. Henline-Hughes Funeral Home in Bakersville was in charge of arrangements.
