He was the son of the late James B. and Hester Hughes Ray. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Lucille Barnett and Hannah Ray; and four brothers, Garfield, Walter, Biss and Garrett Ray. He was a former employee of Mt. Mitchell State Park, and later a ranger with the U.S. Forest Service. He was a member of Pigeon Roost Freewill Baptist Church and a member of Bald Creek Masonic Lodge #397. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Bennett Ray of the home; a daughter, Imajean of Burnsville; a sister, Emma Honeycutt of Green Mountain; one granddaughter; and one great grandson. Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Henline-Hughes Funeral Home in Bakersville. Rev. Jerry Barnett officiated. Burial was at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Bennett Cemetery on Pigeon Roost Road. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Mitchell County, P.O. Box 38, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.
