The son of the late Bertrand Forrester Ruth and Jennie Young Ruth, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, B. F. Ruth Jr. and James Ruth. A native of McDowell County, he was retired from the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. He was active in the Sons of the Confederate Veterans and was a former Deputy Commander of the N.C. Society. He was co-founder of the Confederate Heritage Society. He was also a member of the Jamestowne Society, the General Society of Colonial Wars, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Society of the Descendants of Maureen Duval, the Flagon and Trencher, the National Huguenot Society, the Society of the Descendants of the Colonial Clergy, and St. Andrews Society. Survivors include his wife, Alice of the home; sons Joe Ruth of Brussels, Belgium and Washington, DC, Wayne Ruth of Pisgan Forest, and Kris of Asheville; a daughter, Karen Liptack of Spokane, WA; sisters, Jean Caton and Marie McDade of Raleigh; a brother, Wayne of Jamestown; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine. Rev. Steve Williams officiated. Burial was at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Marion. The family received friends from 6 p.m. until the service hour at the funeral home.
