Robert LeRoy Skillen, 77, died Friday, January 2, at home after a prolonged 
illness.  A 1954 graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, he was a career Naval officer for 
31 years.  During that time he was a photo reconnaissance pilot during the 
Vietnam War, where he was awarded 24 medals, including the Distinguished Flying 
Cross for heroic action in time of war.  He retired at the rank of Captain 
after serving as Commanding Officer of the Naval Photographic Center in 
Washington, D.C.

Mr. Skillen came to Mitchell County in 1974 and worked for several years as a 
reconnaissance consultant for private companies while farming in Bakersville.  
He served as president of Morrison Airfield Foundation and was a member and 
elder of First Presbyterian Church of Spruce Pine.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Plummer Skillen of Bakersville; four children, 
Elizabeth Wilson of Leasburg, Katherine D'Andrea of Atlanta, Robert Skillen of 
Bakersville and James Skillen of Washington, and eleven grandchildren.  He is 
also survived by his sister, Melissa Shull of Gate City, VA.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Mitchell County or the 
Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy, University of Arkansas for Medical 
Sciences, 4301 West Markham St, Slot 816, Little Rock, AR 72205.

A memorial service for Mr. Skillen will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 
17, at First Presbyterian Church of Spruce Pine.
