He was the son of the late Dewey and Lessie Willis Sparks, and husband of the late Mary Pittman Sparks. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Brown, Bill, Dewey Jr. and Mark Sparks; and one sister, Belle Brouilette. He was a retired salesman with Carolina Tire Company and worked part-time with his daughter at Nova Office and School Supply in Marion. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. He was a member of Bear Creek Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, Sunday School teacher and choir member. He sang with the Bear Creek Quartet and with the Golden Age Singers at the Mitchell County Senior Center. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Kay Young of Spruce Pine, and Barbara “Bobbie” Young of Marion; one brother, Guy Sparks of Bakersville; and one granddaughter. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bear Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Chris Rathbone and Harold Dellinger officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine.
