Born in Penland, she was the daughter of Burgess Lafayette Bailey and Louellen Westall Bailey, and wife of the late Charles Clarke and Franklin Slay. Her family was known as the “Deer Park Baileys.” After purchasing land at the end of Bailey’s Peak Road off Penland Road, from her sister, she arranged to have wild turkeys released on the property and had it designated as a state wildlife preserve. Her father founded Deer Park in 1875 as the first wildlife refuge in western North Carolina. A member of the World Wide Church of God, she was a frequent visitor to the Penland area. Survivors include two daughters, Adele Lumsden of Paradise, CA, and Barbara Foster of Tulsa, OK; a son, Ronald Slay of Staten Island, NY; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. A graveside service was held on Saturday, June 2 at 1 p.m. at the Bailey Cemetery on Deer Park Road. Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine was in charge of arrangements.
