SPRUCE PINE - Raymond Gaudenz Thomas Jr., 92, died Friday, May 11, 2007 in Spruce Pine Community Hospital. He was the son of the late Raymond Gaudenz Thomas Sr. and Louise Timanus Thomas. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Louise and Carolyn. He was the youngest person to pass the entrance exam to Annapolis Navel Academy at age 15. During WWII, he served in the Merchant Marines Maritime as a deck officer. He was retired from the Sun Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and was a member of First Baptist Church of Spruce Pine. He had previously served as Sunday School superintendent, Florida State Brotherhood Leader, deacon and Hospice worker. Survivors include his daughter, Sandra Davis of Spruce Pine; a son, Raymond Gaudenz "Tommie" Thomas III of Fort Lauderdale; a brother, Douglas Carroll Thomas of Frederick, Md.; one granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church. Dr. David Vess officiated. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Forest City. Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine assisted the family.
