SHERWOOD TIPTON 

UNICOI, TN - Sherwood Tipton, 88, of Spring Brook Road, died Tuesday, May 2, 
2006. A native of Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Christopher 
Columbus and Minnie McCourry Tipton, and husband of the late Virginia Elliot 
Tipton. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was retired from Clinchfield Railroad 
and the VA Center Mountain Home, TN. He was a member of Limestone Cove United 
Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Hettie Tipton; two sons, James Sherwood Tipton and 
Samuel Franklin Tipton, both of Erwin, TN; three grandchildren; and six great 
grandchildren. 

Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Valley Funeral 
Home in Erwin. Revs. Gene Deaton, Billy Byrd and Esteal Williams officiated. 
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Friday and conducted by Company H Second 
Squadron 278th Armored Calvary Regiment Honor Guard in Roselawn Memory Gardens 
in Johnson City, TN. The family received friends from 6 p.m. until the service 
hour on Thursday at the funeral home. Henline-Hughes Funeral Home in 
Bakersville assisted the family.
