MITCHELL COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - John Ewing Tipton, 11 Jan 2003 ----¤¤¤¤---- JOHN EWING TIPTON SPRUCE PINE - John Ewing Tipton, 77, of North Mountain Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003 at his residence. He was the son of the late Merritt and Lillian Huskins Tipton, and the adopted son of Spurgeon and Estie Woody Buchanan. A member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church, he was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War, and received the Purple Heart. He was instrumental in starting the Estatoe Volunteer Fire Department and received the Outstanding Volunteer Service Award in 1989. He also did volunteer work at Spruce Pine Community Hospital and was a member of Bakersville Lodge #357 Disabled American Veterans. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Gurley Tipton of the home; one daughter, Selita Tipton of Spruce Pine; sisters, Maxie Burgin, Evelyn Hensley, Ruby McKinney, Lorene Harris and Inez Honeycutt, all of Burnsville, and Lona Boston and Barbara Geouge of Spruce Pine; brothers, Jim Buchanan of Spruce Pine, and Bill Tipton of Burnsville; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Liberty Hill Baptist Church. Revs. David Johnson andDan Whetstine officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery, with graveside rites by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family received friends from 1 p.m. until the service hour at the church. Henline-Hughes Funeral Home in Bakersville was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Mitchell County, P.O.
