He was the son of the late James and Augusta "Gustie" Beam Vaughn, and husband of the late Betty Buryl Vaughn. He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Houston, Jeff, Malcom, Roy and Woodrow Vaughn; and three sisters, Virginia Vaughn, Willie Mae Ollis and Hazel Thompson. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. and was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He was a retired member of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades and had worked for Ingles Supermarket for many years. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Judy Wood of Spruce Pine; sons, James E. Vaughn of Dunn, and Jeff Vaughn of Las Vegas, Nev.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Temple Baptist Church. Rev. Tim Rupard officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pine. Memorial donations may be made to Temple Baptist Missions, 117 Prison Camp Road, Newland, NC 28657.
