ROANOKE, VA - Leonard Whitson Sr., 71, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008. Originally from the Red Hill community, he moved to the Roanoke Valley in 1953 to accept a position with the former Clover Creamery of Roanoke, where he was employed for more than 20 years. He had been retired for several years from the former Unidyne Corporation of Norfolk, Va. He felt no one could have too many children or dogs to love. Always the "life of the party", he never met a stranger and always had a joke or funny story to tell. Survivors include his wife, Iva Josephine Whitson of the home; one son, Leonard Whitson Jr. of Roanoke; four daughters, Lenora Montouri of Roanoke, Cynthia Eakin of Bedford, and Debbie Jones and Robin Hall, both of Salem; a sister, Faye Ingram of Bakersville; eight grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at noon Monday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. A graveside service was held at Fairview Cemetery in Roanoke. The family received friends from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. In honor of his devotion and love of animals, memorial donations may be made to the Roanoke Valley SPCA.
