A native of Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Dave and Dollie Miller Gardner, and wife of the late Howard Byrd and Kenneth Whorten. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Bill Gardner. Survivors include her daughters, Sandra Byrd Sturgill of Green Mountain and Kimberly Byrd Church of Elk Park; a son, Ronnie Dean Byrd of Green Mountain; stepchildren, Terry, Tim, Steve, Mike, Scott and Brooke Whorton, Gay Hughes and Robin Whitson; brothers, Boyd and Doug Gardner of Valdese, Kenneth Gardner of Greenville, SC, and Darrell and Larry Bennett of Travelers Rest, SC; sisters, Jean Grindstaff of Burnsville, Carlene Duvall of Bakersville, and Janett Povey of Valdese; seven step- grandchildren; and one great step-grandchild. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Henline- Hughes Funeral Home in Bakersville. Rev. Marvin Silver officiated. Burial followed in Bennett Cemetery. The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
