He was the son of the late John and Bertha Thomas Whitson, and husband of the late Carrie Johnson Whitson and Lora Stamey Whitson. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Arba Renfro; and brothers, Rev. Park Whitson and Floyd Whitson. He was a self-employed homebuilder and member of Greenlee Baptist Church. He was a former deacon and Sunday School teacher at Bakersville Baptist Church and former Sunday School teacher at Red Hill Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Frances Woody Whitson of the home; a daughter, Eileen Boone of Old Fort; son, Ellis Whitson of Penland; step daughters, Carol Markum of Los Angles, CA, and Ruth Woody of Marion; three sisters, Rosa Silvers, Ruby Grindstaff and Lois Gortney, all of Bakersville; one brother, Sherwood Whitson of Burnsville; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one step grandson; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Bakersville Baptist Church. Revs. Vernon Buchanan, Coy J. Jeans Jr. and Travis Newton officiated. Burial followed in Bakersville Memorial Cemetery. The family received visitors from 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Henline-Hughes Funeral Home in Bakersville.
